Studio for an Artist
The owner brought rich and evocative images with her to this design process, and the concept that evolved was one that sought to make a collage of disparate elements. Outside, metal components and commercial aluminum windows juxtapose with locally milled rotary sawn pine clapboards and canvas sunshades. Inside, commercial dust extraction equipment sits in open view of adjacent spaces with limestone, tiger maple, forged iron, concrete and marble mosaic.
Steel framing supports long interior spans and tall ceilings; wood framing and aluminum storefront windows provide a curtain wall skin; fir joists support the second floor rooms. Standard commercial materials and details are elevated to a high level of craftsmanship through the expectations of the owner and the talent of the builders.
