House for a Winter Wren
This project explores the concept of separating the functions of a design into different forms and materials. The concept of shelter is expressed with a stainless steel roof, while sanctuary comes in the form of a nest box of teak. The choice of these two materials reflects their functions: stainless steel for its weather-resistance and durability, teak for its protection and warmth. The nest box can be lifted, slid out from under the roof and brought inside for the winter. This further reinforces the permanent characteristic of the hanging roof versus the transient nature of the nest box and its inhabitants.
